Double pleasure!
First vintage of 100% own grapes (in the older vintages there was still a blend of bought in grapes). The Johanna Brandt is a single block Chenin, the lower part of the block which is on shale. It is the rounder, more powerful of the two Spioenkop Chenin Blanc wines, and has a slightly more tropical fruit profile (citrus zest, quince, elderberry, ripe fig, nuttiness and spices), still with nice acidity.
Alc 13,6% - T/A 6.8 – R/S 4.3 – pH 3.20
The story behind the name: When Pretoria was conquered by the English during the Anglo-Boer War, Johanna Brandt (being Dutch / part of the Boers) served as a nurse. As such she organised women to spy on British officers, which information served the Boers in the guerilla that took place at that moment.
